Abyssinian Banana
Abyssinian Banana - Musa ensete.
Banana is a tropical herbaceous plant from the Banana family. It has a powerful rhizome, growing up to 2 m tall. The leaves are beautiful, large, with a delicate texture, reddish below, form a "false" stem.
Banana is self pollinating. It enters fruiting from 3-5 years of age, it is better in greenhouses or winter gardens. Blooms in spring, forming large showy bunches. In summer, it sets inedible fruits that look like small bananas that ripen by winter. After fruiting, the aerial part of the plant dies off, and offspring appear from the rhizome, from which full-fledged plants develop.
Banana is light, moisture and thermophilic. Resistant to low humidity, but responsive to frequent spraying. The best soil is nutritious, consisting of soddy soil, compost and sand (4:1:1). In summer, the plant needs abundant watering and weekly top dressing. In winter - moderate watering, only from a pallet, so that the base of the trunk does not rot. The winter content temperature is +16+18 °C.
Propagated by seeds, offspring, division of the rhizome. Seeds are soaked in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Then the slightly softened shell is carefully scarified. Sow seeds in a mixture of peat and sand (1: 1). The seed container is placed in a warm, bright place. The optimum temperature for seed germination is about +30°C.
The soil should always be moist without stagnant water. Seeds germinate within 2 - 10 weeks. Seedlings develop quickly. For the summer, adult plants can be planted in the garden in a bright place, protected from wind and heavy rains.
